British Supermarket Tesco Scans More Than Just Groceries
The world is advancing and ever changing as great strides in technology shape and redefine our understanding of people and culture. No longer do we look to The Jetsons for our fix of a dreamlike futuristic world of chrome and flying cars, when the endless possibilities for technology are already on our doorstep. With Facebook keeping track of your “likes” and Twitter promoting “trends” it should come as no shock that a British supermarket has recently announced plans to install televisions that literally capture their audience.
Tesco, one of Britain’s leading supermarket chains, is teaming up with Amscreen to develop ‘OptimEyes,” televisions that capture images of the customers and determine their sex and relative age, which will then be used to tailor advertisements to the predominant demographic at any given time.
This recent announcement has raised a number of questions mainly concerning invasion of privacy. But one of the less scrutinized factors in this decision is how are giant televisions looming over the check out line going to affect the visual aspect of the supermarket, and in turn affect the buyer experience?
Imagine, a young woman picking up a few things at the market after a morning run, finding herself checking out an ad for smart water, nutri made bars, or cat food, while she waits in line to purchase a breakfast wrap. In another case, an elderly man may see ads for vitamins and Polident while waiting for his wife to buy groceries.
This tailored experience could be an interesting and effective way for companies to learn more about their clients, and influence buyer purchases. However, large ominous screens capturing snapshots of your face may not seem that inviting to all customers.
For this inventive idea to become a success, Tesco and Amscreen should consider designing an ‘OptimEyes’ that is a little more inconspicuous, or at least visually appealing. The intentions are good, but no one wants to feel like Big Brother is watching them buy Haagen Daz and anti fungal cream.

Southeastern Products is a full-service industry leader in retail decor, fixtures, design and product display. Our turnkey approach allows us to design and build retail interiors that create loyalty, generate word of mouth, attract customers, and increase sales. We raise the bar in the décor/fixture/marketing space. We educate the retailers that don’t know about us (yet), that providers of this type are not all the same. We are the new generation design-build.
Mustaches…It’s who we are. It’s what we do.
Tell me that walking past a man with an oversized long handlebar mustache doesn’t just make you giddy with joy and I will call you the biggest liar since Janet Jackson had a “wardrobe malfunction” on national television. There’s just something about a mustache that screams, “Hey, I’m awesome and I like to raise awareness for men’s health.”
Wait what? You heard right. Not only does the month of November, dubbed “Movember,” allow you to fully embrace the no-shave-reverting-to-primal-roots mentality but you will also be supporting a good cause. Who knew!
I mean, where would Tom Selleck be without that big caterpillar under his nose? Or how would Ned Flanders be so friendly without his welcoming stache? Really, Mustaches have forever progressed our society into what it is today.
So here’s the run down. Movember.com allows you to register as a “Mo Bro,” entitling you, yes you, to disregard the desires of your romantic partner for a clean shaven, baby faced man. During the entire month of November, all the Bros get to bask in the hairy glory of their shaping and trimming moustachery skills. But get this, folk’s can even sponsor Bro’s mustaches and proactively become a part of the goal of Movember: to raise awareness and support for prostate cancer and testicular cancer initiatives.
BUT WAIT. There is something even cooler. Southeastern Products is taking advantage of this opportunity to raise money for a good cause. We are people-people over here, and supporting programs such as the LIVESTRONG Foundation and the Prostate Cancer Foundation are important to us.

We’re going to be posting pictures of our Movember Mustaches throughout the month so that you can keep tabs on our priceless hairpieces. This is a great (and fun) opportunity for you to support a good cause. Because, come on, Mario would be half the princess-saving turtle shell-blasting man he is today without his Movember Stache.
Mission Manifesto: Tyler Burgess’s Jack Daniels-Fueled Vision for Southeastern Products
Our mission is to solve our customer’s problem whatever it happens to be, from creative and strategic design to value engineering all the way through manufacturing and installation. We have a passionate and diverse team of professional people here that are driven not by sales and profit margin (but lets not lie, those are necessary for our survival) but by helping you solve your problem and easing your pain.
We are not a company of order takers but a company of collaborators. We understand that there are several hundred, maybe even thousand, companies out there who can take your order and fill it. If that is all you are interested in, then by all means give them a call.
But if you’re looking for a partner who wants to work with you and who will be there with you through thick and thin, someone who will do whatever it takes to make sure your project goes off without a hitch, someone who doesn’t understand the meaning of that’s not our problem, well then give us a call.
Here at Southeastern we love to create and we take great pride in the quality of our craftsmanship. Whether it’s wood fixtures, millwork, or digitally printed signage, we just love being able to create the highest quality “stuff” from piles of raw material.
While all these things pay the bills, it’s more than that. Being able to provide quality products for our customers allows us to invest in new technology and machinery which allows us to do what we really love…play. We can often be found hanging around the shop after hours or on weekends building subbuteo or foosball tables or doing work for local schools and charities (or extreme home makeover, yeah we’ve done that too) because we are not just craftsman, designers and engineers here. At Southeastern we are artists.
When we aren’t out designing mouth-watering interiors for everyone from Whole Foods to Food Lion, we are giving back to our community, see how… (READ MORE)
